Key takeaways

  • Retell AI ranks first at 65 of 100 on six measures we fixed before scoring any platform. Its headline rate starts at USD 0.07 a minute, and 20 calls can run at once with no add-on.
  • Vertical AI scores 63 and Vapi 62, so the top three sit within 3 points of each other. Vertical AI leads on Australian numbers and hosting, and trails on rate a minute and published audits.
  • None of the four overseas platforms says on a public page that it processes calls in Australia. Vapi names US and EU deployments, Synthflow shows EU and US hosting badges, and Retell AI and Bland AI name no region at all.
  • Synthflow is the one overseas platform that sells an Australian number inside its own console, once you register an address. Retell AI and Bland AI sell US and Canadian numbers, and Vapi's free numbers carry US area codes only.
  • Four of the five platforms publish a SOC 2 report, and three also show ISO 27001. Vertical AI states that its independent SOC 2 audit has not been done, so it scores 0 on that measure.

What a voice AI platform is and is not

A voice AI platform is the console and API your team uses to build its own phone agent. You write the prompt, attach tools that read and write your systems, pick a voice and connect a number. The platform then runs each call: it listens, passes the words to a language model, speaks the reply and copes with interruptions.

A platform is a kit, and someone on your side still has to assemble it. Your developers write the prompt, wire each integration, test the awkward calls and repair the agent when a model or voice is retired. The rates on this page pay for minutes, and the engineering time sits outside them.

Most platforms here add the cost of the model, the voice and the phone line on top of a platform fee. Treat the platform fee as a floor and budget from the vendor's own all-in estimate. Vapi's estimator, for example, puts 1,000 minutes at USD 82 to USD 129 a month.

Two checks narrow the list quickly for an Australian team. The first is whether the console sells an Australian number or sends you to your own carrier.

The second is whether any public page states the country where the call audio and the model run. On 8 November 2026, only one platform on this list answered yes to both.

How we ranked these voice AI platforms

We fixed the six measures and their weights on 8 November 2026, then scored each platform from its own pricing, docs and security pages read that day. A measure a platform does not publish scores 0 and its cell reads Not published.

Rates are compared in each vendor's own currency with no conversion. That favours the US dollar platforms over our Australian dollar rate. A tie goes to the lower published rate a minute.

The best voice AI platforms in 2026

We scored 5 voice AI platforms on the six measures above, and the list below runs in score order. We make Vertical AI.

It places second, 2 points behind Retell AI, and all four other platforms score higher than us on published security audits. Retell AI also beats us on rate a minute and on concurrent calls.

  1. 1. Retell AI, best for the most concurrent calls on a pay-as-you-go account

Retell AI scores 65 of 100. Its pricing page, read on 8 November 2026, gives a voice agent range of USD 0.07 to USD 0.31 a minute.

That total starts with USD 0.055 a minute for Retell's voice infrastructure and USD 0.015 for telephony, then adds the model and voice you pick. Calls bill by the second, and a new account gets USD 10 of credit.

Twenty concurrent calls come free, and each line past that costs USD 8 a month. Knowledge bases cost USD 8 each a month after the first 10. Denoising, guardrails and knowledge base lookups add USD 0.005 a minute each, PII removal adds USD 0.01, and AI quality assurance costs USD 0.10 a minute after 100 free minutes.

Retell's number docs say it sells US and Canadian numbers only, so an Australian line arrives through custom telephony from your own carrier. No page we read names a hosting region. The pricing page states SOC 2 certification, shows an ISO 27001 badge and lists HIPAA cover with a BAA on Enterprise.

Its simulation testing runs as a text conversation and places no call, which earns 8 of 15 on testing. Enterprise adds custom concurrency from 50 calls, dedicated implementation support and a dedicated server.

Best suited for: A developer team that expects call spikes and wants many lines open without a monthly commitment. It fits a build where the Australian number already sits with a carrier you control.

  2. 2. Vertical AI, best for Australian numbers and Australian hosting on a self-serve plan

Vertical AI scores 63 of 100. We publish this guide, so every figure in this entry comes from our own pricing and security pages.

Plans cost A$299 a month for 500 minutes, A$599 for 1,000 and A$999 for 2,000, and each minute past the allowance is A$0.40. That rate is the highest on this list in raw numbers, and it costs us 12 of the 20 price points.

Every plan includes Australian numbers: 1 on Starter, 3 on Growth and 5 on Scale, with 1300 numbers available and extra numbers at A$10 a month. Our agents answer on servers in Sydney. Call audio, speech recognition, the voice, the AI model, recordings and transcripts all stay onshore by default, and they move only when you choose an overseas model or voice for an agent.

Synthetic test callers come with every plan, with personas for accents, moods and bad lines, and a publish gate stops an untested agent going live. Starter allows 2 concurrent calls, Growth 6 and Scale 12, and each extra line costs A$25 a month.

We publish no independent audit. Our security page says the SOC 2 controls are mapped and the audit has not been done, and that IRAP is out of scope, so we score 0 of 15 there. If you want us to build the agent instead, the Launch build costs A$2,490 and goes live in 5 days.

Best suited for: An Australian team that wants to build its own agent on a local number with the call processed onshore. It fits a line that needs up to 12 calls at once, with further lines bought one at a time.

  3. 3. Vapi, best for simulated voice testing beside a low hosting fee

Vapi scores 62 of 100. It charges USD 0.05 a minute for hosting on pay as you go and passes the transcriber, model and voice through at cost, read on vapi.ai/pricing on 8 November 2026. Its own estimator puts 1,000 minutes at USD 82 to USD 129 a month, which is the rate we scored.

The pay-as-you-go tier includes USD 5 of credit, 1 phone number and 4 concurrent calls. Core costs USD 29 a month for 10 concurrent calls and 5 numbers.

Pro carries a USD 999 monthly minimum for 30 calls, role-based access and a 99 per cent uptime SLA. Extra lines cost USD 10 each a month, and HIPAA handling is a USD 2,000 monthly add-on.

Vapi's free numbers carry US area codes only, and its docs route any international number through an import. Its trust page names US and EU deployments and no Australian one. It reports a SOC 2 Type II examination for 1 July 2025 to 31 July 2026 and lists HIPAA, PCI DSS v4.0.1 and GDPR, with no ISO 27001.

Vapi Simulations put an AI tester on the caller's side, in chat or in voice, and its Evals check one reply against a fixed history. That earns the full 15 on testing.

Best suited for: An engineering team that wants to choose its own transcriber, model and voice and pay for each at cost. It fits a release process that runs simulated voice calls before every change.

  4. 4. Bland AI, best for high daily call volume on a published plan

Bland AI scores 54 of 100. Its Start plan costs nothing a month and charges USD 0.14 a minute of talk time, capped at 100 calls a day and 10 at once, read on bland.ai/pricing on 8 November 2026. Build costs USD 299 a month and lowers the rate to USD 0.12, with 2,000 calls a day and 50 at once.

Transfer time costs USD 0.05 a minute on Start and USD 0.04 on Build, and every plan lists a 99.9 per cent uptime SLA. Enterprise is contracted to your volume. It adds unlimited calls, a dedicated orchestration server, on-premises or VPC deployment, and data residency with no region named.

Bland's number API buys US and Canadian numbers at USD 15 a month and asks you to contact support for any other country. You can bring your own carrier account or SIP trunk instead and skip the transfer fee. Bland lists SOC 2 Type I and Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA with a BAA, GDPR and FedRAMP 20x Class A.

Its Agent Testing runs a tester persona against your pathway and grades each run with pass or fail assertions. The docs do not say whether that simulated call is spoken or typed, so it scores 8 of 15.

Best suited for: An outbound team that places thousands of calls a day from US or Canadian numbers. It fits a buyer who can sign an Enterprise contract to get residency and an on-premises option.

  5. 5. Synthflow, best for an Australian number from an overseas platform's own console

Synthflow scores 43 of 100. Its pricing page, read on 8 November 2026, publishes no rate at all.

Every new deployment starts on an annual Enterprise agreement scoped to call volume, phone system, integrations, security needs and launch support. There is no free plan and no trial, so it scores 0 on price and 0 on concurrency.

Synthflow is the one overseas platform here that sells Australian numbers inside its own console, next to US and Canadian ones. Its docs say an Australian number needs a registered address first. A number from any other country arrives over SIP or from your own carrier account.

The pricing page footer shows EU and US hosting badges and names no Australian region. Synthflow lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001, GDPR, PCI DSS v4.0.1 and a self-attested HIPAA statement, with ISO/IEC 42001, DORA and the EU AI Act marked in progress.

Its Simulations pair your agent with a persona agent playing the customer and score the result against your success criteria, and test suites run many scenarios in parallel. The docs do not say the persona speaks, so testing scores 8 of 15. White labelling, with one workspace per client under your own brand and domain, comes inside the annual agreement.

Best suited for: An agency that resells voice agents under its own brand and wants each client in a separate workspace. It fits a buyer who is ready for an annual contract before the first call.

Questions

Retell AI scores highest on our six measures at 65 of 100, read on 8 November 2026. Vertical AI scores 63 and Vapi 62. The best one for your build depends on whether Australian hosting, testing or concurrency matters most, and the fit table maps each need to a platform.

Vertical AI is the only platform on this list that states Australian processing on a public page. Vapi names US and EU deployments and Synthflow shows EU and US hosting. Retell AI and Bland AI name no region.

Synthflow and Vertical AI sell Australian numbers inside the platform. Retell AI and Bland AI sell US and Canadian numbers, and Vapi's free numbers are US only. On those three, you connect an Australian number from your own carrier over SIP or an import.

Retell AI lists USD 0.07 to USD 0.31 a minute, and Vapi estimates USD 82 to USD 129 for 1,000 minutes. Bland AI charges USD 0.14 on Start and USD 0.12 on Build. Vertical AI plans run A$299 to A$999 a month with minutes included, then A$0.40 a minute.

Retell AI, Bland AI and Synthflow show both, and Vapi reports a SOC 2 Type II examination without ISO 27001. Vertical AI has mapped its SOC 2 controls but has not had the independent audit.

Run simulated callers against it, in voice where you can, and gate each release on the results. Vapi documents voice simulations and Vertical AI includes synthetic test callers on every plan. Retell AI's simulations run in text.

Your team writes the prompt, connects your systems, tests the edge cases and repairs the agent when a model or voice changes. The per-minute rate covers none of that work. A managed build moves it to the vendor, for a one-off fee.
